Director Chow Named Civil Engineer of the Year

ASCE Maryland Section Civil Engineer of the YearBaltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Rudolph S. Chow, P.E., has been named Civil Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Maryland Section.

The ASCE award recognizes that Director Chow's “sustained and unusual efforts have enhanced the advancement of the civil engineering profession and/or provided a service to mankind during calendar year 2016.”

During his tenure with DPW, Director Chow has made great strides in many areas. This includes implementation of a state-of-the-art water billing system with installation of new automated meters.  In addition, he has taken the lead in launching the mentoring program to encourage young adults to pursue careers in the water industry.  Under the Director's leadership, DPW has been recognized as a “Utility of the Future Today,” a recognition program that celebrates the progress and exceptional performance of the nation’s wastewater utilities.

Director Chow is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Maryland and Delaware with over 30 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry. He is an active member of ASCE, American Water Works Association (AWWA), Water Environment Federation (WEF), Water Research Foundation (WRF), National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA), American Public Works Association (APWA), and Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and serves on a number of boards and committees.

The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society with 75 sections including Maryland.

DPW is Now Accepting Public Comments on the Modified Sanitary Sewer Consent Decree Revised Emergency Response Plan 

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW)  has announced the release of its Revised Emergency Response Plan (ERP), a reference tool to be used by City personnel during a sanitary sewer overflow or reported building backup emergency. The Modified Sanitary Sewer Consent Decree (MCD) requires DPW to submit a revised Emergency Response Plan to protect the public health and welfare in the event of an unpermitted release, spill, or discharge of pollutants from the sewer collection system or in the event of a reported building backup.

Register Now for the Mayor's Fall Cleanup, October 26

Mayor Brandon M. Scott, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW), and the Mayor's Office of Community Affairs have announced the upcoming Mayor's Annual Fall Clean-up and Day of Service. Residents, volunteer groups, and community associations are encouraged to register now to participate in the city-wide effort to beautify neighborhoods. The event will run on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Mattress and Box Spring Recycling Now Available at Quarantine Road Landfill Residential Drop-Off Center



Looking to get rid of an old mattress? Baltimore City residents can now drop off mattresses and box springs for recycling at the Baltimore City Department of Public Works’ (DPW) Quarantine Road Landfill Residential Drop-Off Center. In the coming months, DPW will expand this mattress recycling service to other Residential Drop-Off Centers across the city.
